Whilst putting links on your website is a great way of directing people to useful information (especially within your own site) it should be used sparingly.
What search engines are looking for first and foremost is quality content, the more the better. If this content leads Google to another page on your website then that is great. You are helping the website viewer find information.
If the content leads to website viewer to another website this will detract from your website "score" when it comes time for search engines to rank you. The only person really benefting from the link is the website that is the target of the link.
At the end of the day search engines like Google are looking at how many people are linking to your website, not how many website you link to.
