The Sunshine Coasts Most Responsive Web Hosting
Web hosting comes in few shapes and forms and the costs vary accordingly, but the end result is always the same; you have a platform from which to run your website and you hopefully have an email server that can collect emails on your behalf waiting for you to download them to your computer.
There are generally (and by generally I mean commercially used) two types of web hosting; Linux Based and Windows Based Hosting which basically service two different markets.
Linux based hosting will provide access for HTML only websites through to commercial programmed websites that use open source programming platforms such as PHP on which a lot of free content managers such as Joomla or Drupal run on.
Windows based hosting will provide the same services as above but will also host websites and applications that have been built on Microsoft’s .NET framework which is predominately used for business grade websites and applications.
So why the price differences?
The prices for website hosting can vary between hosting platforms and even between providers of the same hosting platforms. It all depends on the web hosting companies pricing policy, but there are a few things to be aware of when you look at changing your website hosting
Usually when you see website hosting for $5 a month you will be buying into Linux based platform on which the hosting provider is placing your website on the same computer as thousands and sometimes hundreds of thousands of other websites. If you think about the computer that you are sitting at now being accessed by a hundred thousand people per minute that is what you are buying.
With this price can come poor performance, not just occasional poor performance, constant poor performance which can start to affect your business. Take a look at some other websites similar to yours and assess for yourself whether they load quicker. The chances are that the ones that load quicker are paying more for their website hosting.
Websites don’t use a lot of computer resources (again generally) but when you throw thousands of small sites on one machine you are going to get performance issues.
What do I need to look for?
- Ask your website developer what language your website is written and what tools are used to run the website. Do you need .NET and Microsoft SQL Server? Do you need Joomla and MySQL
- What website hosting platform is the minimum for running the website?
- What volume of traffic is currently accessing your website in Gigabytes?
- How big is your current website, the database and your email accounts?
Once you have all of this information you can start to look at hosting that suits your requirements. It is easy to say “hey I can get it for $5 a month” but the reality is that this may not suit your website.
